Police: Oregon woman robbed bank, picked up kids
GRANTS PASS, Ore. — Police in southern Oregon say a woman charged with robbing a bank in Grants Pass stopped to pick up her children at school on the way home.
The Grants Pass Daily Courier reported a woman walked into an Umpqua Bank branch shortly after 2 p.m. Monday, handed the teller a note demanding cash, and then rode off in a car driven by a man.
Police say a witness description of the car and license plates led to the home of 37-year-old Erica F. Anderson, who was arrested on robbery and theft charges after returning from picking up her daughters at their elementary school.
Authorities say 19-year-old Joshua K. Deeter Tseu drove the car and was arrested on the same charges.
It was unclear if either has an attorney.
Shivering Wyoming horses get indoor exercise place
BAIROIL, Wyo. — Humans aren’t the only ones who can use an indoor place to exercise during Wyoming’s harsh winters.
The town of Bairoil (BAYR’-oil) has an 80- by 120-foot barn where people can give their horses a workout in bad weather.
The Rawlins Daily Times reports the barn has no heat and no seating, but it does have electric lights so it can be used after dark.
The Bairoil town government operates the barn. Town Clerk Barb Miles explains it this way: “We don’t have a lot of protection from wind and snow from any direction.”
Residents who pay a fee get an access code. They can get in 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Fees range from $35 a month for individuals to $100 a month for commercial use.
Parking ticket? Try yoga bends, Mass. city says
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Drivers annoyed by parking tickets in Cambridge, Mass., are getting some calming advice from city officials – try yoga.
The city’s parking tickets include instructions on the reverse on how to bend into some simple yoga positions.
The city, which is home to Harvard and MIT, printed 40,000 of the tickets as part of a public art project by artist-in-residence Daniel Peltz. Cambridge parking enforcement officers hand out about 340,000 tickets per year.
Susan Clippinger, the city’s transportation chief, tells the Boston Herald the purpose of the tickets is to “debunk the idea that all parking tickets are a hostile action.”
Not everyone is buying it. Cambridge resident Hyunho Noh said “it’s not working” as he showed up to pay a $25 ticket.
Boulder to pay $10,000 to man arrested in skivvies
BOULDER, Colo. — The lawyer for a Colorado man who was arrested for addressing the Boulder City Council in his boxer shorts said the city has agreed to pay $10,000 to settle his civil rights claim.
Attorney David Lane said Seth Brigham accepted the deal Tuesday. In exchange for the payment, Brigham agreed not to file a lawsuit.
Brigham was handcuffed and arrested in February on suspicion of obstructing police and trespassing after he spoke to the council clad in his underwear. Brigham said he was trying to make a point about a proposal to criminalize nudity.
The charges were later dropped.
UK book halts traffic after truck turns over
LONDON — Andrew Marr’s latest book is, literally, stopping traffic.
Boxes containing 15 British tons (16.8 U.S. tons) worth of the journalist’s history volume “The Making of Modern Britain” have been strewn across a busy English road after an accident.
Thames Valley Police said Wednesday that a truck carrying books overturned about 40 miles (65 kilometers) west of London just before midnight on Tuesday. The driver suffered cuts to his arms, and the road was closed throughout the night as the books were cleared away.
Video footage on the BBC website showed smashed-open boxes of the book piled by the roadside.
“The Making of Modern Britain” is described by its publisher as “a fascinating portrait of life in Britain during the first half of the 20th century.”
Marr, a BBC reporter and presenter, apologized to anyone who had been inconvenienced, and said he hoped the book was not “being taken off to be pulped.”
Montana woman fends off bear attack with zucchini
HELENA, Mont. — A Montana woman fended off a bear trying to muscle its way into her home Thursday by pelting the animal with a large piece of zucchini from her garden.
The woman suffered minor scratches and one of her dogs was wounded after tussling with the 200-pound bear.
The attack happened just after midnight when the woman let her three dogs into the backyard for their nighttime ritual before she headed to bed, Missoula County Sheriff’s Lt. Rich Maricelli said. Authorities believe the black bear was just 25 yards away, eating apples from a tree.
Two of the dogs sensed the bear, began barking and ran away, Maricelli said. The third dog, a 12-year-old collie that wasn’t very mobile, remained close to the woman as she stood in the doorway of the home near Frenchtown in western Montana.
Before she knew what was happening, the bear was on top of the dog and batting the collie back and forth, Maricelli said.
“She kicked the bear with her left leg as hard as she could, and she said she felt like she caught it pretty solidly under the chin,” Maricelli said.
But as she kicked, the bruin swiped at her leg with its paw and ripped her jeans.
The bear then turned its full attention to the woman in the doorway. She retreated into the house and tried to close the door, but the bear stuck its head and part of a shoulder through the doorway.
The woman held onto the door with her right hand. With her left, she reached behind and grabbed a 14-inch zucchini that she had picked from her garden earlier and was sitting on the kitchen counter, Maricelli said.
She threw the vegetable. It bopped the bruin on the top of its head and the animal fled, Maricelli said.
The woman called for help from a relative staying with her. They found the collie outside, unable to move, and took it to a veterinarian.
The dog appeared to be fine on Thursday, but the vet was keeping it for observation, Maricelli said.
The woman did not need medical attention for the scratches on her leg, though she got a tetanus shot as a precaution, Maricelli said.
Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks officials set up a trap in an attempt to capture the bear, the agency said in a statement.
Besides the nearby fruit trees, there wasn’t anything on the woman’s property that would attract a bear into the backyard, like garbage or livestock feed, wildlife officials said.
Maricelli interviewed the woman, but said the sheriff’s office was complying with her wish not to identify her.
“She was very, very shaken, and it kind of took the humor portion out of it for me,” Maricelli said. “She said it had this horrific growl and was snarling.
“(But) she can see the humor in it, and she wanted the story put out so the local residents can take precautionary measures,” he added.
Man survives passing out with head in museum noose
DODGE CITY, Kan. — An Arkansas man got a frightening look at frontier justice when he passed out with a display noose around his head during a trip to a Wild West-themed Kansas museum, officials said.
Police in Dodge City, Kan., have declined to release the name of the 69-year-old visitor from Parks, Ark. They said he lost consciousness Wednesday and slumped in the “Hanging Tree” noose display at the Boot Hill Museum.
Museum director Lara Brehm said museum staff and two women he was with helped remove the man from the noose, and that he regained consciousness before being taken to a hospital.
The noose usually hangs 15 feet in the air, and the museum doesn’t know how it came to be hanging low enough for a visitor to reach it, Brehm said. It was hanging in its proper place when the museum closed the night before the incident, she said.
“From what we understand he was using it as a photo opportunity,” Brehm said. “We don’t know for sure how it came to be where anybody could reach it.”
Brehm said it was unclear why the man passed out, and that his feet remained on the ground.
“It was not a hanging in the sense that we use that word,” she said.
Brehm said the man remained in stable condition Thursday at a Wichita hospital. She said he had pre-existing conditions that warranted the move to Wichita.
The noose had been hanging where it was since the museum opened 63 years ago without incident, Brehm said. It has been taken down, and officials had not decided another would be put back up.
“We’ll make the appropriate decision when we figure out what happened,” she said.
Aye Carumba! Mass. Bart Simpson statue stolen
HOLBROOK, Mass. — Aye Carumba! A Bart Simpson statue has been stolen from outside of a Massachusetts restaurant.
The three-foot tall, 75-pound ceramic statue sitting on a park bench outside of Leggos in Holbrook disappeared sometime Sunday, and management is having a cow.
Owner Astrit Gorezi says the statue, which was chained down, was a popular topic of conversation with customers. He says he just wants it back.
Gorezi brought the statue a few months ago for a few hundred dollars.
Police are investigating, but so far have no suspects, not even Simpson’s nemesis, Sideshow Bob.
Wyoming man douses himself in paint to avoid Taser
CHEYENNE, Wyo. — A Cheyenne man who doused himself with white latex paint in hopes of avoiding a police Taser was hit with the stun gun anyway.
The Taser chase happened Sept. 16, when Cheyenne police went to Brian Mattert’s house on a domestic violence call. The Wyoming Tribune Eagle reports that when police arrived, Mattert thought they’d use a Taser on him, so he hastily covered himself in paint and told officers that if they shot him with the stun gun, he’d die.
Officers told him the paint wouldn’t affect the Taser’s capability. According to police, Mattert scuffled with officers and was hit with a Taser twice before officers handcuffed him.
He faces several criminal charges. Police say the officers’ uniforms had to be cleaned.
