Drats, six times!!!!!!

July 17th, 2011 by Amelia Morrison Hipps

Dear readers, please accept my apologies for not having a column in last week’s newspaper. Sometimes, however, the universe seems to conspire against you, and such was the case last week. Couple of things you should know, first and foremost. My schedule at work has changed. Liz Ferrell, our former managing editor at The Hartsville [...]

Riding the Carousel of Life

June 26th, 2011 by Amelia Morrison Hipps

Ever have one of those weeks when your mind wanders from one subject or issue to another? Well, that’s been my situation for the past week. I call it riding the Carousel of Life and at times it seems to go faster and faster, while you can’t decide if you need to ride the big [...]

Thank you, God, for my Daddy

June 15th, 2011 by Amelia Morrison Hipps

Sunday is Father’s Day, and I thank God each year that I can celebrate it with my Daddy, because a little over 36 years ago, I almost lost him.

Lessons I had learned long before Oprah reminded me

June 10th, 2011 by Amelia Morrison Hipps

Not everyone is a fan of Oprah Winfrey and that’s OK. That said and accepted, there is one indisputable truth about her years on television: throughout the 25 years of The Oprah Winfrey Show, there were gems of universal truths offered either by her or her guests.

On her final broadcast, Oprah shared a number of things that she knows for sure, and a few of them resonated with me as lessons I had already learned. Today, I want to share a couple of those with you.

An homage to my mother means service to you

June 5th, 2011 by Amelia Morrison Hipps

Tuesday, May 31, 2011 — As I write this on Sunday, five years have passed since I walked through the doors of The Lebanon Democrat as its Managing Editor. I began my service to the citizens of Wilson County on Memorial Day 2006, May 29.

I use the word “service” deliberately, because to me, The Lebanon Democrat is your newspaper about your community. On a daily basis, our pages are 90 percent filled with the news and events that happen in Lebanon and Wilson County. When space permits or the news warrants, we give space to news outside of our county. But, primarily, we are dedicated to just our county.

Two months of 2011 have already passed, and within that short amount of time, I have already faced several new challenges.

The Gentle Giant

September 26th, 2010 by Amelia Morrison Hipps

John Coal Hipps is known as the gentle giant at our house. We have yet to meet a person or animal that John doesn’t immediately think of as simply a new friend. We joke that if he were to accidentally kill a fly, he would want to send a sympathy card. At 122.6 pounds, according [...]

Living with a fellow editor

September 26th, 2010 by Amelia Morrison Hipps

Life at times can be difficult when you live with someone who has spent the majority of his life doing similar work as yours. Don’t get me wrong, there have been more times than I can count, that Redhippo (aka my husband Jim, or if I’m angry James Arthur) has saved my butt by editing [...]

Lewis, Clark & Goofy

September 19th, 2010 by Amelia Morrison Hipps

One of our favorite things to do on the weekend is to get up early while it’s still cool, grab a cup of coffee and head out to the back yard with our four, four-legged children and watch them explore their 2.5 acres. Roughly, 1.5 acres of the backyard are woods, while the other acre [...]
