The dirty truth about detergent use

You may as well be putting literal money down the drain.

Because there’s no way (or reason why) that much laundry/dishwasher detergent is necessary.

A New York Times article from March dared explore what many have thought when the time has come to open the wallet for these sudsy wonders.

We don’t need a full cap of soap for a full load of dishes or clothes. Keep in mind the measurements for liquid detergents were made before the advent of high-efficiency machines and concentrated soap solutions. (And really, why wouldn’t the soap companies want you to use more than you need? You’ll be buying their product again that much sooner.)

Believe it or not, such a simple idea as cutting back on detergents can end up saving you more than a few pennies, as less is spent per year on the detergents themselves and on replacing the clothes we’re abusing in our spin cycle.

I know I could stand to see a few extra dollars floating around in my handbag….

This was an interesting article that explores the math and gave both Method and Seventh Generation glowing reviews. Worth a read if like me, you’ve got at least one rinse cycle scheduled for the weekend. Happy Friday!

Oddly enough I’ve been doing this for years now. I figured it by accident, when I was trying to make my detergent and funds last a little longer when I was in college.

  2. Hmm. I am not so sure about that…
